What Should I look for in a Permanent Makeup Artist

All permanent makeup artists are not created equally.  The average consumer does not realize that in most states permanent makeup is not regulated.  So as a result nail shops, your local tattoo artist, and or ambitions Jane Doe can stick a sign on the door and be open for business doing permanent makeup.  Therefore, it is imperative for consumers to do their homework before making the most permanent investment that they can make in themselves.

  •  Sterile Environment:  First and foremost a clean sterile environment should be number one.  Your health is most important so do not take the risk with an unsanitary environment.  The enviorment where your permanent makeup is to be performed should display an updated certificate of OSHA’s Blood borne Pathogens Certification.  This Certification trains owners/ employees how bloodborne pathogens are spread and how to help prevent exposure incidents by following work practice controls. Topics include engineering controls, personal protective equipment, personal hygiene, cleaning/disinfecting equipment and supplies, and recognizing, reporting and following up on employee exposures to infectious material.  Needles should be single use and properly disposed of.  Your permanent makeup artist should show you the needle to be use prior to beginning your treatment.

  • Portfolio (Before/ After Pictures):  Pictures are worth a thousand words, and in the case of permanent makeup this is truly the case.  As a consumer you should request before and after shots of his or her work.  Also, make sure to ask if this is in fact their work.  When many artists get out of school they are provided with stock photos with others pictures.  This is also the same on their websites as well.

  • Training:  Because there are no state regulations for permanent makeup artist it is important to ask where and when they were trained.  Ask to see their certifications and credentials.  With many artists getting in to the field of Permanent Makeup, artist is taking a $99 course online to learn the art of permanent makeup.  Most artists that have done so are usually those artists that charge way below industry standard cost.  If the price is to low beware!

  • Continuing Education and Advanced Training:  Permanent Makeup is constantly evolving.  New equipment, techniques, products, etc are constantly coming into the forefront in this industry.  As a professional your Permanent Makeup Artist should keep up with current trends and be able to discuss this with you.  It’s not so much that you should get the latest eyebrow shape that may today be a fad, but the new safer techniques are important to know about.  This lets you know that your Permanent Makeup Artist is current and will provide you the best service with the most understanding of industry stands possible.

  • Years of Experience:  You may not want a brand new artist doing your permanent makeup. Seasoned artist may not always be a guarantee of great work either, but with experience does sometime come a better ability to perform permanent makeup procedures.  The SPCP reports that only 27% of its members practice permanent cosmetics fulltime. And the national average for new procedures is only 6.3 per month. So in addition to asking a technician how long he or she has been tattooing, ask how many procedures they are performing each week.  Also ask is he or she fulltime, or is this a hobby or something their doing on the side.  When selecting a Permanent Makeup Artist you want to make sure this is a primary function of the artist job function.

  • Artistic Ability:  Implanting pigment is only half of the work.  Having an artistic eye for color and shape is crucial to any permanent makeup out come.  Especially when it comes to eyebrows your artist should have a background in either makeup artistry and or creative arts.  Drawing ability separates those that place pigment in the skin to those who will design you a customized look that not only looks natural but properly frames your face.

  • Referrals:  Referrals are important to have in order to find out from others just like you how their experience was.  Referrals/ Testimonials should be listed on both online review and their company websites as well.  Satisfied clients often enjoy telling of their experience and unsatisfied will share their opinions as well.  It is important to gather the facts and make an informed decision that works best for you.

  • Legitimate Business:  Is the business that you are seeking a legitimate business.  In today’s environment there are several permanent makeup artists that are doing permanent makeup out of their homes and back rooms of salons.  If this is the case the business may not be legitimate.  With a non legitimate business more than likely you and the permanent makeup artist that is performing your procedure is not covered.  It’s just like hiring a contractor for your house.  The contractor must be licensed and bonded.  This demonstrates a professionalism, pride in their business, and a responsible business person.
